DIY: How to clean mould yourself




When getting rid of mould, if a professional service (mould removal company) is not an option or you want to do it yourself, it’s important to follow a few basic rules. These include eye protection, good ventilation or air purifying equipment (air scrubbers).


We don’t recommend spraying or fogging to kill mould because as explained during our mould process. All that does is saturate the air with dead spores and plant fragments which is dramatically increasing your exposure.


If the property has experienced water damage, one way to remove mould and prevent mould growth is to reduce moisture.


We use a HEPA vacuum and physically clean using some form of the following mould treatment procedures. This can be something as simple as washing the walls with a mild detergent or sugar soap to clean mould and then use white vinegar to kill the mould or something more complicated involving the San Air product with its essential oils.


Mould stains are slightly more difficult to remove from surfaces, as they consist of the plant root system which penetrates porous and non-porous surfaces.


One solution for this would be to mix bleach and treat the area, though this only hides the damage. A more permanent solution is the removal of the material to prevent mould problems from reoccurring. For this, IICRC certified technicians.
