WHAT IS BLACK MOULD?

Updated: Feb 5

There are a lot of mould varieties that are black however the variety of mould associated with BLACK MOULD is a particular variety called Stachybotrys.

Most mould varieties that you will encounter within your property will not be Stachybotrys.

Stachybotrys is associated with long-term water leaks and prefers a constantly wet environment, the Mould spores from Stachybotrys are quite large and very sticky which means they may not always be present in air quality test results.

The only way to know which varieties are present will be through testing. This may consist of Air quality Testing or Tape sampling.

How To Remove Black Mould

  1. Install an air scrubber

This removes any spore’s hyphae and particulates that are in already the air or potentially being released during cleaning.

2. Hepa vacuum all surfaces using a horsehair brush attachment, where there is visual mould and any contaminated areas.

We use a vacuum with a Hepa filter because of the small size of the spores (2 microns and over) normal vacuum filters can’t catch them and will spray the spores out into the air. The horsehair brush is used because of its magnetic attributes which assist with removing the spores.

3. Physically remove mould by wiping the surface with a microfibre cloth and a cleaning agent designed to kill mould.

We use a product called SAN AIR which is made from natural Australian ingredients including essential oils and is a far more effective method to kill mould than more traditional products. Most harsh chemicals and natural products like natural vinegar relies on mould confusing it as a food source and then consuming it at its peril. However, SAN AIR mixes with the mucus surrounding the mould effectively suffocating it proving much more effective with a lot less product contact for success.

4. HEPA vacuum for a second time

This will remove any debris left behind.

5. Gaseous peroxide treatment

For most people, step 4 is their last step, but we prefer to conduct a Gaseous peroxide treatment. Gaseous peroxide is created by turning highly concentrated peroxide into a gas that engulfs the area being remediated killing all microscopic life and has the added benefit of neutralizing the mycotoxins and killing mould.

SERVICES WE OFFER

We have noticed that although there is an abundant number of building biologists, hygienists and mould specialists available to use, they don’t provide a service that addresses all the areas we have covered in our Description.

So, we have put together a comprehensive plan to make it easier for you to get a positive outcome for your unique situation. We call this our Mould Remediation Scope.

The purpose of this scope is to identify water ingress and resulting mould, establish the levels and varieties of mould within the property, offer recommendations on works required to fix the water ingress, offer a remediation plan and a price to conduct our recommended works.
